poetry by chloe meltzer

Chicago at 6:00pm

Two planes going in opposite directions.
Amber and black ink light posts stand out
against the baby blue sky adorned with wispy clouds.
Two buses hiding behind a wall of light and dark ivy.
Five trees along the opposing wall, all bearing fruit,
yet they’re dying. The sun makes her way down and sparkles in fractals
against the glass building further north.
Shrinking skyscrapers aligning with one another
as you make your way south.
I envy the strength of the two bronze statues.
Not only in the way they’re perceived,
but how they’ve been able to withstand so much.
I would like to play hopscotch on these endless panels of stone,
however, it’d take a lifetime to complete.
